What Is The Next Big Thing For Social Networking

Social Networking as begun to flourish as means of people communicating together. Let’s take a look at some numbers. As of November 2007, there were over 50 million people who have a Facebook account. As of August 2006, there were over 100 million people who have a MySpace account. At that time, MySpace was signing up about 500,000 new users per week. As of March 2008, there were over 1.5 million people who use Twitter. As of March 2008, Ning surpassed 200,000 networks. I could go on with numbers forever, but I won’t. You also have to take in del.icio.us, Digg, Yahoo Pipes, etc… There are many many different ways the social networking is flourishing, but what is next? What is going to be the next BIG way to social network?

  1. i believe that the system is working just a little bit too well!, and i DO believe that very soon, sh!t will hit the fan one way or another!. And hence the next big thing!.

Seriously think about it!, EVERYBODY is connected, everybody is sharing, and everybody is happy!. Facebook is worth 14 billion dollar, thats almost three times as much as FORD is worth!, COMMON!, i’m all about chaos theory. And social networks have had very little amount of problems so far!, in comparisons to their growth. They are overdue.

  2. Mozey:

When you say that they are overdue, which do you mean? Do you mean that social networking is way overdue, or the fact that there hasn’t been many problems with social networking, so the problems are overdue and will be coming soon?

What type of shit will be hitting the fan?

I personally think that Facebook is going to run MySpace down the tubes completely, call me crazy…I know…

Well, this is 100% intuitive talk, i’m not basing this on anything in particular. I do work in a company where i’m exposed to LARGE systems. And out of what i have noticed:

    - The larger the system, the SLOWER it should change, or things will break!.
    - The more powerful the system the more likely unwanted people would want to tinker with it.

We have had few issues with social networks that has been addressed by many people, including:
    - Spammers
    - Sexual preditors,
Call me paranoid, but i do think we will have BIGGER issues, and maybe soon.

Now!, what could it be!?, NO CLUE, perhaps someone will write a WICKED NUTTS facebook app that APPEARS to be interesting, and a bunch of people will download/use/install (not sure how that works over there!, i dont have an account), and when the time is write, the app author invokes the “secret” part of the code which hijackes bank cookies!. And out of (how many million users?), some of them who are using the app WILL have thier online banking open!.

I’m going to the store to buy three years worth of beans and dry food!.
